Don’t use aggressive nail polish removers; they
dry your fingernails and damage the keratin coats.
Nail art on false acrylic nails is the best way
to go. The false nails won’t affect the growth
of your underlying nails.
PLEASE SUGGEST A DIET PLAN FOR A WOMAN WITH POLYCYSTIC OVARY SYNDROME (PCOS).
Anandita Mehta, Mumbai
In PCOS, the woman’s reproductive system doesn’t produce the right amount of hormones necessary
to develop and release healthy eggs. The symptoms
include irregular periods, excessive hair (hirsutism)particularly on the face, chest or stomach, thinning
of scalp hair or baldness, acne, difficulty in maintaining a healthy weight and fertility problems (difficulty
in conceiving). Here are some ways to control
these symptoms:
Exercise and weight loss are the most effective ways to improve insulin resistance.
Low carbohydrate and low Glycemic Index (GI) diets are often promoted for the treatment
of PCOS.
The quantity and type of carbohydrates you eat also impacts the insulin levels.
Avoid or limit carbohydrates that have been refined
as they take a long time to digest.
Increase the intake of whole grains in
the form of jowar, oats, brown rice and barley
in your diet.
Try to eat at least 25 gm of fibre every day
by including vegetables like turnips, parsley, cabbage, broccoli, spinach and cucumber.
Add protein-rich foods like pulses, chickpeas, lean meat and lentils in your diet.
Eat fresh fruits like raspberries, apples, cherries, grapefruit, peaches and strawberries.
Exercise daily for at least 30 minutes.
