A Brilliant Opening

Cocktail has fared way better than expectations. Even though a 60-70 per cent opening was always on the cards, the fact that it showed escalation on Friday evening itself and grew further over the rest of the weekend shows that the film was patronised by its target audience. With the weekend collections touching the 36-crore mark, Cocktail has now fetched Saif Ali Khan his biggest opening ever. Though there are mixed opinions about certain portions of the film and some critics have found the narrative a tad flawed, the audience feedback has ranged from above average to very good.

All this means that the first week collections should be quite healthy (around 55 crores).

Since there is no competition in the week to come and the multiplexes would continue to give enough space to Cocktail, the film is now all set to be Saif’s biggest grosser ever, hence comfortably crossing the Love Aaj Kal total of 67 crores.

Bol Bachchan Does Quite Well

Bol Bachchan (BB) not only showed good escalation over Sunday but also sustained the momentum during weekdays. While trade numbers of the opening week have ranged between 60-63 crores, the producers have declared the figure approximately as 67 crores and one has to go by that. Such numbers have now given the film a good platform to strengthen its march towards the 100-crore mark, something that looked impossible after the first couple of days.

However, it won’t be an easy run to the 100-crore club as Cocktail is all set to dominate the multiplexes. But one can be sure that BB would do better in single screens. Even if the film doesn’t touch the 100-crore mark, it is all set to cross 90 crores at least (if one goes by the producer’s total). That would still be very good for all involved, especially for Abhishek Bachchan, who hasn’t had a good run of late. As for Asin Thottumkal, she continues her successful run at the box-office with this film. The film’s success further consolidates the brand building and loyal following that Ajay Devgn-Rohit Shetty films enjoy today.

Small Releases Ahead

As many as four films release this weekend – Mere Dost Picture Abhi Baki Hai (MDPABH), Challo Driver, Gattu and Overtime but none of them is expected to set the house on fire. MDPABH was ready for some time but has now been revived by Sunil Shetty. However, one can’t really expect much as far as its box-office performance is concerned. The remaining three films are just arriving in a clutter. Challo Driver could have gained some mileage due to Kainaz Motivala (of Ragini MMS fame) but the makers haven’t capitalized on that. Gattu, after the success of Stanley Ka Dabba and Chillar Party, could have seen a better release and a better promotional campaign but that hasn’t happened either. As for Overtime, it’s arriving out of nowhere.

All this means that the collections for these films would range from five to 20 per cent and none of them will stay beyond a week at the theatres. With Cocktail occupying multiplexes and Bol Bachchan continuing to make moolah at single screen theatres, it would be all the more difficult for these films to make their presence felt. However, the biggest challenge will come from Hollywood flick The Dark Knight Rises, which is expected to create havoc on its release.

The shooting of Dabangg 2 has resumed. While Salman Khan would be shooting for the Arbaaz Khan-directed affair, he would also be a part of an elaborate promotional campaign for Ek Tha Tiger, which releases on 15th August. Sanjay Dutt has allocated as many as 100 days for the Saamy remake where he is the central protagonist. This is after years that a film of his has demanded so much of time and attention from him. There is still uncertainty around the leading lady opposite Tiger Shroff in the yet untitled film, which is being produced by Sajid Nadiadwala. Director Saabir Khan is currently keeping his options open even though names like Parineeti Chopra, Nargis Fakhri and Diana Penty are doing the rounds.

Imtiaz Ali is all set to get started on his next film. It is confirmed that he and Ranbir Kapoor would be pairing up all over again after Rockstar. Deepika Padukone’s stocks have risen further with the success of Cocktail. Her biggest success since Love Aaj Kal, she will be a part of two major announcements soon.

After a gap of over two years, writer-director Rensil D’Silva will be calling the shots all over again. Things are being put together for his next film with producer Karan Johar, which will go on floors in the next few months.
